Discover Yummy Rice Bowls

Walking into Yummy Rice Bowls for the first time felt like discovering a local secret that everyone should already know. Tucked at 204 Scott Troy Rd A, O'Fallon, IL 62269, United States, this spot blends the ease of a diner with the freshness you usually expect from a place that takes food seriously. I stopped by on a busy weekday afternoon, and even with a steady stream of customers, the vibe stayed relaxed and friendly, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think while deciding what to order.

The menu is built around rice bowls, but that description barely scratches the surface. Each bowl follows a simple process I watched unfold in real time: you pick a base like jasmine or brown rice, choose a protein, add vegetables, then finish with a sauce that ties it all together. That made-to-order setup matters. Research from the National Restaurant Association shows that over 70% of diners value customizable meals, and it’s easy to see why here. You’re not locked into a preset combo; you’re building something that fits your mood, your appetite, and even your nutrition goals.

On my visit, I went with a grilled chicken bowl layered with roasted vegetables and a lightly sweet teriyaki-style sauce. The chicken was juicy, not overcooked, and the rice had that just-steamed texture that holds flavor without turning mushy. A staff member mentioned they cook rice in small batches throughout the day, which lines up with best practices recommended by culinary institutes for consistency and food safety. That attention to process shows up in every bite.

What really sets this place apart is how it balances comfort and freshness. According to data shared by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, meals built around whole grains, lean proteins, and vegetables support better energy levels and long-term health. These bowls naturally follow that structure without preaching about it. You can keep things light or go all-in with extra sauce and toppings, and either way it still feels like real food.

I’ve checked out plenty of online reviews before stopping in, and most echoed the same themes I experienced: generous portions, quick service, and consistent quality. One reviewer talked about grabbing lunch here three times a week because the menu doesn’t get boring, and I get that now. With rotating specials and seasonal ingredients, there’s enough variety to keep regulars interested. Another review highlighted how easy it is to order ahead, which is a big plus for anyone on a tight schedule.

From an expertise standpoint, rice bowls have become a staple in modern dining for good reason. Food industry analysts often point out that bowl-based meals allow for balanced macros and efficient kitchen workflows. You can see that efficiency here during the lunch rush, where orders move fast without feeling rushed. Still, it’s fair to say that if you’re looking for white-tablecloth dining or a long, leisurely meal, this isn’t that kind of place. It’s more fast casual comfort, done thoughtfully.

The location itself is convenient, with easy parking and nearby shops, making it a practical stop whether you’re local or just passing through O'Fallon. Staff are happy to explain ingredients or suggest combinations, which builds trust, especially for first-time visitors. While the menu leans heavily on rice bowls, options for different dietary needs are clearly marked, though extremely strict diets might still require a quick chat with the team to customize safely.

Everything about the experience feels honest, from the food to the service. There’s no gimmick, just a solid diner-style spot that understands what people want to eat right now and delivers it consistently, one bowl at a time.

  • We ordered 3 rice bowls for lunch. The food was fresh and delicious. The flavors were awesome. Be prepared to spend $13 or $15 per person, before drinks. There is no seating, so this is a take-out place only. Pick up food on the way to work, or dinner on the way home. They are closed Wednesdays and Sundays. STEP 1: RICE OR SALAD BASE We tried the regular rice and the seasoned rice. Both types were scooped from the same rice pan. For the seasoned rice, the flavor was drizzled on from a dressing bottle. The consistency and flavor of rhe rice was good. STEP 2: PROTEIN We tried the steak and tofu. The kalbi (steak) was delicious, and cubed in nice bite-sized pieces. The tofu was 1 large piece. It was cooked flavorfully, but I found the large piece difficult to eat with chopsticks. I would have liked it to be cubed into bite-sized pieces like the steak. Also, it seemed extra salty to me. STEP 3: TOPPINGS We tried tomatoes, jalapeños, garlic, green onions, cabbage, carrots, kimchi, seaweed salad, and diakon. All the toppings were good. Here, it is your preference for flavor combinations, but in my opinion the jalapeños did not blend well with the other flavors. The fresh vegetables were great. The toppings offered seem to vary from day to day, with quite a few more options available than what is just shown on the printed menu. For instance, there was cucumber kimchi in addition to the regular (cabbage) kimchi listed. I've noticed that the business owner lists some of these supplemental toppings on the business Facebook page. However, I did not see them posted inside the store. A list of all toppings would have been helpful. You can look in the prep counter and see the toppings that are available, though (think Subway counter). The person who helped us at the counter was quite friendly and explained any toppings we were unfamiliar with. He seemed to indicate that he had prepared them himself. STEP 4: SAUCE We tried 3 different sauces (spicy mayo, barbecue, and yummy sauce). All three sauces were good. The flavors of a lot of the toppings would have made a tasty rice bowl without adding any sauces, so you may want to consider adding sauces if you have more bland selections (plain rice with carrots and cabbage), or being careful of adding sauces that combine too many flavors if you have more seasoned selections (like the seasoned rice with marinated steak, garlic and, seaweed). I could have skipped the sauce and still had a ton of flavors in my rice bowl. Overall, I recommend this place and plan to return to try more items on the menu.

  • Delicious, unique and fresh. Our group of three, each tried different proteins (Japanese chicken, Korean beef and Filipino pork). The owner was helpful with suggestions that enhanced each of our bowls. Wide variety of choices. We will definitely be back.

  • It wasn't listed on my gluten free app so I requested for it to be added. It's a sweet little hidden gem. The staff is very knowledgeable about food allergies, specifically gluten for me. They had a dedicated gluten free option for my rice bowl and gave suggestions for add-ins that would be safe as well. They offered to put my meal in a separate bag to prevent any cross contamination. They offer bubble tea in addition to the rice bowls. They have outdoor seating and the food is really simple and delicious!

  • We are new to the area and its our second time here! This place is chipotle style where you pick what you want for your bowl. The protein options are delicious! You can tell they are slow cooked, tender and juicy. Their rice is so delicious!! I have to point this out because a lot of restaurants mess up rice but theirs is always fluffy with a great taste to it. My rice also gets moist from the protein broth, like I said seems like they are slow cooked . I wish they had homemade pickled onions and maduros. This place needs social media so people know how great this is!

  • Incredibly yummy rice bowls with tons of fresh and unique ingredients to choose from. They have 4 different kinds of meat and so many different toppings including many special toppings that are only available that day. The kimchi was particularly delicious. The selection of sauces to add to your bowl are many and flavorful. The one downer is they don’t have any tables to eat it there. Some people were eating in their car when I was there. They also have a reward club you can join and a discount for paying with cash. Everyone was super friendly. Definitely check this place out for a fast, healthy meal!

  • Ate here with my grandma and man, as a Filipino myself, the Filipino food was so good and accurate it left me wondering if they had an actual Filipino dude hiding in the kitchen

  • I’ve had the food at yummy rice bowl about three times now, every time I’m wondering why I feel like something is missing. Here it is, all of their meats are great! The portions are very generous, like other people have said! But all the toppings that they have are cold toppings that don’t belong to be put in with hot food. If I were them, I would drop one of the four hot protein options, and include a cold poke option. Most of those toppings, which are really good, deserve to be on a pole bowl.
